I heard the irritation in my boss’s voice as I hesitantly told her I was too ill to come in to work. “What is it about the third week of every month?” she said. Then she thought for a minute and said, “Oh…that?”

“Yeah,” I said, near tears. “That.”

That, of course, was my period. For at least three days of each month, my cramps were so severe I couldn’t get out of bed, but I usually bled for two weeks or more at a time, sometimes requiring blood transfusions when I became anemic.
